What is the purpose of the Holy Spirit?
To do the works of Jesus
Jesus is our role model. We have the same power as He used
--anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus' focus or mission was "to seek and save that which is lost.
--The Ministry of Reconciliation
---2 Corinthians 5:18-21 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ as through God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
--The Great Commission
---Mark 16:15 and He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature."
--- John 14:12 Most assuredly I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to my Father.
---Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
---Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth
---Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
---Mark 16:15-20 and He said to them "Go into the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover." So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.
To have the power to defeat the flesh and the devil
Spiritual warfare is not shouting at devils and making declarations about them. It is putting your flesh under subjection. It is a battle of the mind.
---2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down the strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
--- Galatians 5:16-26 Flesh and Spirit the works of the flesh and the fruits of the Spirit (too long to type, but you can check it out)
--- Romans 8:1-13 the spirit overcomes the flesh (once again, too long to type, but you can check it out)
---1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world
---Luke 10:19-20 Behold I give you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing by no means shall hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.
To take on the "divine nature" and bear the fruits of the Spirit
---Peter 1:4-10 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith-the salvation you souls. Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you
---2 Corinthians 3:17-18 now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord
---Galatians 5:22-26 but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against there is no law. And those who are in Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
---Colossians 3:12-14 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a compliant against one another; even as Christ forgave you, so you must also do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
---Ephesians 5:9 for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.
We can have the "divine nature" or the personality of God. (Think, talk, and act like God)
---2 Peter 1:4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
We will bear the fruits of the Spirit, which we cannot do without the Spirit
--We cannot stop doing the works of the flesh in the flesh
---Romans 8:6-8 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
--We cannot bear the fruits of the Spirit without the Spirit.
To have a constant and ever-present counselor, guide, teacher, and revealer
---John 14:16-21,26 and I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever. The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will also live. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in me, and I in you. He who has my commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to Him. (26) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things I said to you.
---John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of me.
---John 16:7-16 This one is too long to type as well, please take out your bible and read these scriptures.
---1 John 2:20,27 but you have an anointing from the Holy one, and you know all things. But the anointing you received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it taught you, you will abide in Him.
---1 Corinthians 2:9-16 this one is quite a bit to type, so if you would take the time to read this passage, I am sure it will help.
---Ephesians 1:17-19 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what ate the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power towards us who believe, according to the work of His mighty power
---Ephesians 3:16-19 that He would grant you, according to his riches and His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hears through faith; that you being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is width and length and depth and height. To know the Love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
For the Holy Spirit to make intercession for us
---Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps us with our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
To have God's "seal" on us-the earnest of our inheritance
---Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
---Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
---2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us in God, who has also sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee
---Romans 8:14-16 for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the Spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."
To participate in the gifts of the Spirit and signs and wonders to effectively spread the gospel and to minister God's love to others
---1 Corinthians 12:7-11 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of it all; for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of Spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of these tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
---Acts 6:8 and Stephen full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people
---Romans 15:19 in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ
---Mark 16:17-20 And these signs will follow those who believe in My Name the will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they friend anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will receive power. So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, he was received up into heaven and sat down at her right hand of God. And then they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs, Amen.
---1 Corinthians 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men, but the power of God.
